1) What is DiggUpdate?
DiggUpdate 2.5.1 for Windows is the Windows port of a program originally written by Dustin Bachrach (http://www.dbachrach.com) of OpenSoft Development (http://www.dbachrach.com/opensoft/) for Mac OS X. DiggUpdate is the best way to track the latest stories that appear on http://www.digg.com (to know more about digg, visit http://www.digg.com/about). With DiggUpdate you can be quickly informed as a new story hits digg’s frontpage, get an overview of the latest digg’s stories and check which stories your friends dugg or submitted. DiggUpdate for Windows is a port of DiggUpdate to the Windows platform and performs almost identically to the Mac version.
2) What are the system requirements for DiggUpdate?
These are the system requirements in order to use DiggUpdate for Windows:
- PC with Microsoft Windows 98,ME,2000 or XP
(N.B.: you get the best graphical effects with Windows 2000 or XP)
- Microsoft .NET 1.1 runtime
(if you have Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, you should have .NET already installed)
3) How does it work?
To use DiggUpdate, unzip “DiggUpdate2.5.1.zip” in a directory of your choice.
Then enter that directory, and double click the executable “DiggUpdate.exe”.
DiggUpdate will try to connect to the Internet, and retrieve latest Digg’s stories.
If the connection is ok, the first time you use the program a dialog box where
you can choose the mode DiggUpdate will work appears.
DiggUpdate can operate in four different modes:
- “No Digg Window” mode: only a small tray icon is shown; if you click the tray icon, the DiggUpdate menu will show up. DiggUpdate menu will have a list of the recent stories that appeared on Digg, and, optionally, the stories your friends digged or submitted.
- “Classic Digg Window” mode: every time a new story appears on Digg, a window will pop up on the screen. You can then read the story and scroll to the previous stories. The DiggUpdate tray icon will always be in the systray.
- “Slim Digg Window” mode: every time a new story appears on Digg, a small window will pop up from the left of the screen. If more than one story is found, more than one slim window will appear. You can close the slim windows one by one or all together with the close button. The DiggUpdate tray icon will always be in the systray.
- “Growl Window” mode: this mode is a “simulation” of the Growl program (available only on MacOSX). Each time a new story is found, a box will appear on the upper right corner of the screen. If you place the mouse over it you will “block” it. Then, when you put the mouse pointer away, the box will fade scrolling to the right. The DiggUpdate tray icon will always be in the systray.
4) How do I change the preferences?
It’s easy: once DiggUpdate is started, click the tray icon, and then click “Preferences”
on the menu. A dialog box should appear. You will be able to change those settings:
- the number of front page stories displayed
- the number of friend’s stories displayed
- the time interval (in minutes) that will elapse before DiggUpdate checks for new stories
- the possibility to fade slim windows away (after a controllable amount of time)
- the Digg’s operating mode (check paragraph 3)
- the opening speed of the “classic” Digg window
- the transparency of the “classic” Digg window
- the username you use on Digg (to retrieve friend’s stories)
